SunTrain

A pathway to utility-scale electricity using existing freight rail infrastructure

Rapid transit railway

SunTrain is offering a no-cost implementation of their technology for one chosen community

No-Cost Project Description

Cities and utilities across the country face a growing energy capacity challenge. Demand is rising, but conventional solutions—new transmission lines, grid-scale substations, large generation facilities—take years or even decades to permit, finance, and build. Interconnection queues are backed up, transmission corridors are congested, and communities that need more power most urgently are left waiting. Critical facilities remain exposed to grid stress, and volatile energy prices continue to strain municipal budgets.

SunTrain offers a fundamentally different approach: delivering utility-scale electricity via existing freight rail corridors using battery railcars, charged where power is available and discharged where it’s needed. No new transmission infrastructure. No decade-long permitting process. Just a faster, more flexible path to firm, reliable capacity for city loads and critical facilities—delivered on a contracted, metered basis.

This no-cost, 12-month pilot demonstration delivers real, metered electricity to a defined city load or interconnection point on a scheduled basis. Cities receive a complete package of technical, operational, and analytical support. Cities can expect:

  • Delivered megawatt-hours to a defined city load or interconnection point, tracked and reported against contracted delivery windows

  • A documented end-to-end deployment timeline demonstrating speed-to-power advantages over traditional grid upgrade pathways

  • Monthly performance and impact reports covering energy volumes, availability, effective cost metrics, and local economic outcomes

  • A replicable scale-up blueprint—completed siting, engineering, and interconnection documentation—ready to expand from pilot to full deployment

  • Local job creation through construction, electrical, commissioning, and ongoing operations work

The pilot requires a city sponsor to help identify a rail-served site and support coordination with the local utility and permitting agencies. SunTrain manages all equipment, rail operations, and reporting, and retains ownership of the battery railcars throughout. For cities facing capacity shortfalls, rising energy costs, or critical facility resilience gaps—particularly those with existing freight rail access—this pilot delivers something rare: utility-scale energy capacity that can be deployed and operational in months, not years. The pilot is valued at $10 million in delivered capacity and services and is offered at no cost.
